A teen accused to killing Braxton Barhams, 26, in June of this year pleaded guilty to murder in Elkhart County Circuit Court Thursday morning.
It was a not so happy birthday for Jesus Macedo-Perez, who turned 17 Thursday. Macedo-Perez entered a guilty plea and accepted a 65-year prison sentence.
Police say Barhams was gunned down in a drive by shooting on June 22 in the 200 block of E. Garfied St. in Elkhart. His body was found in a yard laying behind a wooden fence where he had reportedly run to escape the shooter.
An investigation led to the arrest of Macedo-Perez the following day.
During his plea hearing, Macedo-Perez answered several questions by chief deputy prosecutor Vicki Becker, confirming his involvement in the shooting.
Macedo-Perez admitted to pointing a handgun at Barhams from inside a vehicle, shooting in Barham's direction with the knowledge and intent to strike him.
The 65 year plea agreement does not include the gang enhancement charges Macedo-Perez faced if he went to trial.
