ELKHART Elkhart schools can't afford to give their employees pay raises, so they're helping them out with a different kind of monetary aid.
Several employees retired in recent years and weren't replaced. Now the corporation is using that money to give hundreds of employees one-time stipends of up to $800.
The Elkhart Truth reports that Elkhart employees haven't seen a raise in at least five years because there isn't enough money from the state to fund it.
The stipends will be given to cafeteria workers, bus drivers, teachers and others at the end of this month.
