Just outside the courthouse Thursday night, dozens of people marched through South Bend to raise awareness about sexual assault and domestic violence right here in Michiana.
In honor of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, folks gathered downtown for the 11th Annual "Take Back the Night" March.
It's hosted every year by the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County and the Rape Crisis Center.
The purpose of event is to break the silence surrounding violence and abuse for those who are too afraid to come forward.
It also allows the community to demonstrate its commitment to helping victims find justice, and preventing more violence from happening in the future.
“It lets the community know that there are people who say that sexual violence is not tolerated, that domestic violence is not tolerated, and we are willing to come out in the cold and shout it out and say that we support survivors and that we are going to continue marching until sexual violence and domestic violence and perpetrators are held accountable,” says the director of the Family Justice Center Sareen Dale.
If you are in need of help, the Family Justice Center has a 24-hour crisis line for victims of sexual assault or domestic violence. Just call 289-HELP.
