Indiana State Excise Police officers arrested 11 people for underage drinking during tailgating at Notre Dame’s home football game against Stanford on Saturday.
The Excise Police were out and about as part of the Intensified College Enforcement initiative, or ICE, part of a multi-year effort by the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission, A.T.C, to reduce underage drinking. The initiative began at Notre Dame just this semester, the goal is to reduce underage drinking, as well as to recognize false I.D.s and deal with intoxicated people.
A.T.C spent two years gathering data before embarking on a state-wide alcohol-compliance-check initiative. According to the Indiana State Excise Police in 2009 nearly 40 percent of vendors selling alcoholic beverages were willing to sell alcohol to minors. Now, the Excise Police say only 5.5 percent of business are.
