Swiss Valley home to a junior world champion skier

Swiss Valley Ski and Snowboard Area had their Small Hills, Big Results party to send off one of their world ranked skiers.

Swiss Valley is home to some of the youngest and most talented skiers in the world. Amongst them is a world champion, from Marcellus.

Young Freestyle Aerial Skier Zach Surdell was greeted by friends, family and guests. They gathered around the fire-pit at the Swiss Valley to wish him good luck for the upcoming Junior World Championship in Italy next week. The 14-year-old is ranked first in the world for his age group and under.

Surdell started skiing when he was only six years old and began freestyle aerial skiing when he was 13. He plans to create tricks with higher degrees of difficulty each year.

"They always push me because when I see them doing a new trick I want to do it,” says Zach Surdell a U.S. Junior World Champion Aerial Skier. “Then if they do it better than me my goal is to do it better than them. So it's like a race I don't really like to think about it too much because feel like it will affect how I train. I just want to think about everybody else that is training. Like all the 18-year-old and stuff because those are my competition right now."

Zach was the front runner in the 2013 World Cup in Lake Placid, New York. It's only his second year, and he is already a member of the U.S. Elite Developmental Ski Team. He's also shooting for a spot in the 2018 Winter Olympics.
