La Porte New developments in a La Porte murder case, where police say a woman's body was found in her own freezer. The woman has now been identified as Birdie Elder.

Danial Shoffner, 47, was taken into custody, and has been charged with murder. Shoffner was elder's roommate for several months in the 100-block of McClung Road.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Shoffner claims the stabbing was an accident. He told police he'd been consuming alcohol and was practicing his knife moves, when he accidentally stabbed Elder in the neck, chest, and hand.

He says he then stuffed the body into a freezer to quote, "keep her cool." That's according to the Northwest Indiana Times .

The report also indicated Shoffner may have tried to commit suicide after the incident.

The coroner hopes to be able to perform an autopsy on Elder’s body Thursday, after it thaws out.
