Suspect at-large in Olive St. shooting

An unusual encounter Saturday night in South Bend sent one man to the hospital with a gunshot wound, while the unidentified suspect remains at-large.

A man was walking along the 400 block of Olive St. at around 10:50 p.m. Saturday night when a man approached him just as he was about to cross Bertrand. The suspect said to him, “I know you,” and the pulled out a small handgun.

The two got into a physical altercation which ended with the suspect shooting the victim in the thigh. Despite the suspect’s statement “I know you,” the victim told police he had never seen him before.

A friend of the victim was able to drive him to Memorial Hospital for treatment, he is expected to be fine but will need surgery to repair the damage.

The suspect is described as a black male, heavy set, between 5’8 and 6’0 feet tall and weighing about 230 pounds. The victim saw him wearing a black skull cap, black hoodie and pants.
