A boy who testified five months ago that his father beat him, today testified that his grandmother knew.

Dellia Castile is on trial for child neglect because of the violence that took place in her South Bend home.

In November of 2011, that violence resulted in the death of 10 year old Tramelle Sturgis.

Today, a surviving sibling of Tramelle took the witness stand.

The boy was 14 at the time, and is 15 year old now.

He said that his grandmother, Dellia Castile was sitting in the sunroom of her home on West Washington Street last November with her son Terry Sturgis who held a 36 inch wooden club and a roll of duct tape.

Earlier both Sturgis and Castile had received telephone calls from the school informing them that the boy had stolen food from the cafeteria and pencils from the art room.

The boy said that Castile was three feet away when Sturgis proclaimed, ‘me and my stick are going to have some fun.’

Terry Sturgis then escorted his eldest son to the basement to take part in a beating session that stopped—only when Tramelle Sturgis stopped breathing and died.

Today’s testimony indicates that at one point in the session, a cousin came down the stairs and asked if Sturgis would stop, and that the cousin had done so on behalf of the grandmother.

The eldest Sturgis son testified that his grandmother knew about his many injuries and had provided him with cocoa butter to sooth the wounds.

The boy said that the grandmother was “in charge of the house,” and often cared for the boys after school, since Terry Sturgis attended dialysis three days a week from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The defense has tried to distance Castile, who lived in the upstairs portion of the home, from what happened downstairs.

Today’s testimony indicates that the Sturgis boys often played upstairs in the sunroom which had an arcade game and a foosball table.
