A new study from the University of Notre Dame asked the question, ‘just how generous are Catholics?’

The answer: not as generous as other Christian denominations in America. The study, published by the university’s Catholic Social and Pastoral Research Initiatives (CSPRI), suggests a “giving gap” between Catholics and other Christians, as well as a lack of spiritual engagement with money.

The authors of the study include the CSPRI’s Director Brian Starks, Christian Smith, and Professor of Sociology William Kenan Jr. After comparing the religious giving of Catholics with other religious communities, they found Catholics typically contribute less.

According to Starks, the study is not intended to say that Catholics are ungenerous, but simply that, on average, many Catholics do not connect money to personal or spiritual growth.

He also says that the Catholic Church could have much more potential, but sometimes fails because of a lack of monetary donations.
