Sorry drivers, bikes will get first crack at the new section of U.S. 31 between South Bend and Plymouth.

The Michiana Bike Coalition has picked out a completed piece of the new highway that lies north of U.S. 6 and south of Kern.

The 26-mile stretch will be opened up to the pedaling public for a special event on June 14.

"It is historic because you can ride your bike as if it were your car and see the same sights, and for most people in the community it's going to be once in a lifetime," explains Judy Lee from the Bike Michiana Coalition.

"We want the whole community to come out. That's really the word I would like to get out: just show up."

The Bike Michiana Coalition is asking participants for a $10 donation.

The proceeds will fund bike safety classes and helmets for young riders.

The new section of U.S. 31 is scheduled to open to cars and trucks sometime in July.
