Stormy day causes problems for drivers in South Bend

Thunderstorms and lightening shook parts of Michiana all day Thursday.

There were several crews called out from police, fire and the street department.

Power lines were down and some streets were temporarily flooded.

A number of intersections were without power in South Bend and cars were coasting through the stop lights.

Along Michigan Street in South Bend the manhole covers popped off, forcing drivers to swerve around the huge holes.

“They are either sewer manholes or storm water drain manholes and apparently the rain is so overwhelming its pushing the lids off,” says Jessie Davis while taking pictures of the missing covers.

At Memorial High School in Elkhart one of the transformers was struck by lightning.

The varsity game for Thursday night was cancelled and re-scheduled for Saturday night.
