South Bend, Ind. Every 25 minutes someone dies from prescription drug over dose. And in Indiana, one in five teenagers have admitted to abusing prescription drugs.
That's why Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, was in South Bend Thursday to talk about the increase in deaths from drug over dose from prescription drugs and how the state is trying to help. They've launched a new website.
The site serves as a one stop shop for people to learn more about drug abuse, recognizing the signs, and symptoms of addiction and where to go for help.
Doctor Thomas Felger from the Saint Joseph County Health Department says for the last four years accidental overdose deaths have exceeded deadly car accidents.
In 2012 there were 27 accidental deaths in Saint Joseph County alone.
“You have a combination of too much being prescribed, sometimes for the wrong reason,” says Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller. “But also they build up in the medicine cabinets. People take two or three, they leave them in their medicine cabinets. So we need a better take back program to get them safely away from teenagers and those that will sell them.”
During the next few weeks you'll begin hearing radio and television adds about the crack down.
