Knox A Knox man says he's not guilty on charges of murder, kidnapping, and carjacking in Starke County.

Gary Chavez is accused of beating his wife to death, kidnapping a man from a business parking lot, stealing a car at gun point, and leading police on a high speed chase in June.

Once cornered by police vehicles, Chaves shot himself in the face and had to be hospitalized in Chicago, before being brought back to Starke County this past weekend.

Chavez entered the plea in court Tuesday, saying his family is still working to get him an attorney. According to our reporting partners at WKVI,, he'll have another hearing on the matter on September 5. He remains in the Starke County Jail with no bond.
