ST. JOSEPH, MI From St. Joseph Today:
The weather could not have been better for the 13th Annual Chalk the Block event held in St. Joseph, Michigan.
Blue skies, warm sunshine and Lake Michigan breezes greeted thousands of tourists and locals who came to see the street artwork created by a dozen regional artists.
Event organizer Jill Stone, executive director of St. Joseph Today, announced the winners of the competition on Monday.
Best of Show: Gary Young sponsored by RyeBelles - $175 Cash Prize
Out of the Box: Lou Rodriguez sponsored by Silver Beach Pizza - $125 Cash Prize
Best Emerging Artist (under 25): Dan Pfahler sponsored by Third Coast Surf Shop - $75 Cash Prize
Honorable Mentions: Danny Bloss sponsored by John DeVries Agency, John Foster sponsored by Lest We Forget and Alex Van Pelt sponsored by White Pine Winery.
Stone said this year’s event also led to a new partnership with Bloom n’ Chalk Fest from Safety Harbor, Florida.
Stacy Schulstrom Roth, a Stevensville native, attended the St. Joseph event as a representative from the Tampa Bay festival. Roth selected Chalk the Block artist Jake Bloss to participate in the March 2015 Bloom n’ Chalk Fest in honor of his Chalk the Block contribution. Almighty Rooter Plumbing will sponsor him.
Roth and Stone agree that the towns of Safety Harbor and St. Joseph are similar in size and have many common traits that will allow the two festivals to exchange marketing and event ideas to help both grow.
