ST. JOSEPH COUNTY Strong winds today are behind the reason some residents near Notre Dame lost power Tuesday afternoon.

It happened near Cedar Grove Cemetery on Notre Dame's campus when strong winds blew over a power line which then pulled a number of other ones down with it.

When that happened a transformer blew.

The cemetery is now closed and AEP and South Bend fire are on the scene checking things out.

Residents nearby said it was a loud noise when it happened.

“And all of a sudden I heard boom,” John Lehner described. “It sounded like an AR-15 or an M-4 rifle going off, and the power went off right away. So I came to the side window and figured, ‘well one of these polls blew a circuit,’ and I saw this pole had snapped in half.”
Residents nearby also say that they've asked AEP about the age and strength of the poles saying they looked like they may have been rotting for years.
