St. Joseph County lost a 4H legend with the passing of Val June Schafer, 88.

She was a long time supporter, leader and participant in 4H. Val June was recently honored at the St. Joseph County Fair for 50-Years of service as a leader.

The Lakeville woman was recently diagnosed with leukemia, and passed away the morning of September 2nd.

Val June has a large extended family, many of whom are affiliated with the 4H program.

Visitation is Wednesday, September 3rd, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Esther Singer Building at the 4H fairgrounds. That's where the funeral will be held on Thursday, September 4th, at 11 a.m. with visitation an hour prior. Burial will follow at Potato Creek.

Donations can be made to the St. Joseph County 4H scholarship program.
