ST. JOSEPH CO., Ind.--- The St. Joseph County Clerk's office will begin issuing a marriage license today to same-sex couples at both Court House locations.
In St. Joseph County for the first time ever a gay marriage license was issued at the clerk's office Wednesday afternoon.
One couple that had been together for 25 years hurried over once they heard the news. They have a daughter together and plan to celebrate Wednesday night.
Many couples will likely hurry over to make it official before the appeal process begins.
Greg Bovo says, “It’s just so that we know that she's going to be taken care of and there will be no battles or anything, hopefully end of discrimination or any problems.”
Couples may apply at the main office in the basement of the Court House at 101 S Main, South Bend and at the County Services Annex, 219 Lincoln Way West Mishawaka.
Office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The couple must apply in the county they reside in, or if out of state in the county they will be getting married in.
The cost is $18.00 for Indiana residents and $60.00 for out of state couples.
Proof of residency and a valid form of Identification must be shown.
There is no waiting period for the license and it is valid for 60 days.
