St. Joseph County Vote Center Committee met for the first time Wednesday

St. Joseph County's Vote Center Committee hopes to present its recommendation to the election board by mid-summer.

The committee is tasked with studying whether or not the move from polling places to vote centers is best for the county.

They met for the first time Wednesday night. Over the next few months, they'll look into the feasibility and cost of the potential change.

St. Joseph County's Clerk says vote centers are needed because of the high number of residents who vote absentee.

“They find it more convenient to vote on their own time instead of on a certain day at a certain time,” says St. Joseph County Clerk Terri Rethlake. “They like the flexibility, and voting centers and satellite centers are an easier way to get people to come out and vote. It's more convenient.”

The committee hopes to have a recommendation for the election board by July. They meet again April 17.
