Snowshoes have been around for hundreds of years. In the past snowshoes were essential tools for fur traders, trappers and anyone whose life depended on getting around in the deep snow, but today people use them for fun!
The St. Joseph County Parks staff is working to get seniors out and about during the winter time, that’s why they started “Snowshoeing for Seniors”.
This is the first year these sessions have been offered. St. Joseph County Parks Leisure Services Manage Jamie Hartzke says they always encourage people to come and use their natural resources for activities, so this is a great way for folks to do just that.
The four week sessions start Tuesday at Ferrettie Baugo Creek County Park in Osceola. Hartzke says participants will walk around the park for about 40 minutes before enjoying warm refreshments and a light snack.
Unfortunately, registration for this event is now closed but they do plan on having this event again next year. Also, if you don’t want to wait until next year you can always go snowshoeing with your family or friends on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of February.
