Over 220 precinct chairs and vice chairs of St. Joseph County’s Democratic Party gathered for an election of officers meeting at the United Auto Workers Local 5 headquarters on Saturday morning.
The last elected chairman, Butch Morgan, resigned after he was charged with ballot petition fraud in connect with the 2008 presidential primary. After Morgan resigned, about 15 months ago, Sen. John Broden stepped in to serve the remainder of his term.
At Saturday’s meeting, Sen. Broden was re-elected and will continue to serve as the County Chair of the Democratic Party.
“The whole party has been incredibly supportive since I took over about a year and a half ago. It was great to feel that support again today and feel that we are doing what we need to do,” said Sen. Broden.
Also re-elected to their position was Deborah Ladyga-Block, Vice Chair of the party, and Gladys Muhammad who will maintain her post as Secretary. The newly-elected member of the leadership team is Steven Goldberg who will become the party’s treasurer.
Each re-elected and newly elected officer will hold their position for the next four years.
On March 9, Broden and Ladyga-Block will host all the county chairs and vice chairs from nine other counties regionally in order to elect the Indiana Democratic Party’s 2nd Congressional District.
