A St. Joseph County Council meeting turned into a long and heated debate over the realignment of Douglas Road Tuesday.
In the end the council voted in favor to realign Douglas Road 7 to 0 with one abstention.
Notre Dame plans to demolish the current Douglas Road and build a new one that cuts through White Field.
Tuesday night a dozen community leaders spoke in support of the plan during the public hearing portion while about two dozen neighbors spoke against it.
“I think a lot of changes have to be made,” says neighbor Bill Partridge. “We are not against this. We are all for progress, beautifying our roads, we just don't think it’s there yet.”
The ordinance will now go on to the St. Joseph County Commissioners for the final vote.
