The fast track to vote centers in St. Joseph County, hit a few snags today.
County commissioners were set to request bids for new voting machines, but sparks between two commissioners tabled the matter.
The St. Joseph County Election Board has decided to pursue vote centers.
They would replace the 150 plus polling sites with 40 centers in the county.
Wednesday Commissioner Dave Thomas raised a couple of issues including the contract's terms that could last five years.
Plus he questioned why bids were being requested when there aren't any companies in Indiana certified to install the machines.
Proponents say the companies will be certified soon and the centers are important in streamlining the voting process.
Thomas says, “Basically I'm saying by putting out an RFP, we are not going to be able to act on it. Maybe we can act on it, but legal counsel needs time to review that.”
The matter was tabled until next week.
The county commissioners will wait for advice from their attorney before making any decisions about the contract.
