A South Bend man who pleaded guilty to battery for pouring lighter fluid on his girlfriend and trying to set her on fire has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

A St. Joseph County judge sentenced Rudy R. Greer on Monday to 12 years in prison and ordered him to spend another six suspended years in prison as a condition of probation.

Prosecutors say the South Bend man set fire Aug. 30 to his girlfriend's Mishawaka apartment and doused her with charcoal lighter fluid. She escaped to a neighbor's house after hitting him on the head and knocking a lighter from his hands before he ignited the fluid.

In January, Greer pleaded guilty to one count of attempted aggravated battery in the attack.
