South Bend's 311 center put to the test, but is it working?

It’s that time of year when the pavement on the street condenses then expands causing those pesky potholes you're trying to dodge, but South Bends new 311 center is helping with that.

Potholes are only one of the reasons this center is making life a little easier for some residents and many say it is working.

For others, it's those potholes that are actually helping local businesses.

Either way, Michiana's weather is certainly taking a toll on our roads.

It is the sound of your car hitting that pothole that sometimes you just can’t miss.

With South Bends new 311 center there’s a solution for that, and all it takes is a quick call, but with something that seems so simple the question is, is it working?

“Sometimes 380 sometimes 420, but approximately 400 calls per day,” says Director of 311, Cynthia Simmons.

And customers are pretty happy.

“They say, “wow I can’t believe I am getting things taken care of as timely as I am,” 311 is just an extension of city’s team, it has just has proven to be very effective,” Simmons continues.

Simmons says that this center is working and problems are getting fixed faster, but for Dave's Garage these potholes aren't so bad.

In fact, they are bringing in some big business.

“Business right now is real good, there are a lot of breakdowns, a lot of batteries, a lot of alternators, starters you know traditional things like that so you know we have the typical business of trying to repair people’s cars. Maybe they didn't take good care of them though the summer time maybe they didn’t keep up with their maintenance, you know tune-ups are good. You know we are doing a good business right now,” says Dave’s Garage Owner, Tom Nufer.

And the winter season in general is helping out as well.

“When it gets colder there are more demands on the electrical system of the car. There are more demands on the engine when it gets cold, it’s harder to get the engines running and getting them started and getting them up to temperature properly,” Nufer continues.
Nufer says the best way to stay away from having to spend money fixing your car is maintenance.

He says if you think you have a problem with your car get it looked at especially if you are going into winter.
