South Bend women charged after causing a serious car accident

A South Bend mother has learned her punishment for being high on drugs when she got into a serious car accident last year.

Depheny Stewart, 24, was charged with a class D felony for crashing her vehicle last April with coke and pot in her system.

After admitting to the crime last month, Stewart was sentenced Wednesday to one year in prison and one year suspended.

Police say Stewart made an illegal left turn off western, onto walnut. An oncoming SUV could not stop in time and hit Stewart's vehicle, trapping her and her young child inside.

The wreck left her six-year-old son Xavier critically injured.

This is not the first time Stewart has been in trouble with the law. She was arrested in 2007 for disorderly conduct, and again in 2009 in St. Joseph County.
