A South Bend woman is relying on a hot oven and small space heater to keep her apartment warm. She is also worried about her two young children, ages four and two.
Back in June Arnita Johnson moved into her apartment at 522 Colfax Avenue in South Bend. It wasn't until recently that she had some problems.
She says the landlord passed out space heaters during December's first cold snap but this week it was unbearable.
The floor board and main heaters don't work. So she's been using the space heater and leaving the oven on to warm her apartment during the day.
“It’s definitely a bother because I'm paying rent religiously on time every month,” says Johnson. “There's no reason I should have to warm my apartment this way.”
The managers of the property said they haven't received any complaints from Johnson about the heat.
They talked with the fire marshal and say it is ok to issue space heaters when the main heaters are sub-standard. However they never advised any of the tenants to use their ovens.
Wednesday afternoon they told Newscenter Sixteen they would contact Johnson.
