South Bend to get a lot brighter

SOUTH BEND For a second year, a program aimed at beautifying the streets of Downtown South Bend is back, with a goal to double its efforts.

Grow Downtown is a beautification initiative that gives community members the opportunity to make their mark on the city. Hanging flowers and planters are available for purchase, and volunteers will install the plants in early May.

Organizers and volunteers acknowledge there is a fundraising goal, but they say the project's ambitions exceed ornamental value.

"In any downtown area, there's a lot of building, a lot of brick, mortar, concrete, pavement," said Joel Barrett, the General Manager of the Ambassador Program for DTSB. "There's not a large amount of green space in downtown, so this allows us to have that green space and color."

This year's flowers are Vining Vincas. Volunteers will begin planting May 3.
