South Bend is ready to add smart solid waste trucks to its fleet.
The city currently has four solid waste trucks that run on CNG fuel, and two more will join this spring. Another three will be added in 2015.
The goal is to eventually have all solid waste trucks run on CNG fuel, which costs just over 70 cents a gallon, compared to the price of diesel at $3.89.
The trucks will save South Bend $80,000 this year.
South Bend is also in the process of installing smart garbage cans, which are equipped with radio frequency ID tags, to prevent things like theft and improve garbage collection accuracy.
