A former South Bend Community School teacher is taking on a new task. Katie Femia is now a published author.

“Even though we teach full time, we still have hobbies,” Katie Femia says. “For me, creative writing was a hobby, and it eventually came to the point I wanted to devote more time to it. It became a full time job.”

Her book, Peacock Swamp, went on sale last weekend. She says it took more than two years to write.

It is a futuristic plot where the healthcare system has collapsed. In order to receive medication, people must be go before a panel who will either approve or deny the request.

As an educator, Femia hopes the fast pace of the novel will help keep young adult readers interested in reading and literature.

The book is available on Amazon, at Barnes and Noble and at local book stores. There will also be a book release event March 29th at Mishawaka Antiques.
