South Bend Energy conservation is going to new heights in South Bend, gaining praise and attention from state leaders. Governor Mike Pence has designated this week as Indiana Green Roof Week.

In downtown South Bend, the Century Center is installing a sky garden that will help manage water runoff and reduce the building's heating and air-conditioning costs. It will be the first public-access green roof in the city.

The project is spear-headed by the non-profit organization Greening the Bend, and the goal is to have the entire project complete by 2016.

Over at Saint Mary's College Spes Unica Hall, a green roof, or live roof, there covers about 12% of the building, making it one of the most cost effective buildings on campus. Those who work on the third floor say it’s also very pleasing to look at.

Spes Unica Hall is where South Bend Deputy Mayor Mark Neal will lead a news conference Tuesday morning, overlooking the garden.
