SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend has big plans to improve and build along the Lincolnway and Western Avenue corridors.
The city has been gathering feedback on what people want to see changed along the roadways.
Major development is years away, but the city is working with architects to develop a cohesive plan to move forward.
The goal is to increase retail and residential usage.
When it's finished, the West Side corridors plan will help property owners make investments in the land around these busy urban arteries.
“The idea of recreating a tapestry of villages, so the west side historically had great neighborhood centers,” said Scott Ford, Department of Community Investment. “Every couple blocks there was a corner store, a butcher and a bakery shop. So reestablishing those nodes, walkable centers, that are mixed income, vibrant, centers.”
Planning for the project started last winter, and a final report is due in August.
