A man was sent to the hospital with a broken leg after getting into a snowmobile accident Sunday afternoon.

According to Conservation Officer Jonathan Boyd of the Dept. of Natural Resources, the 24-year-old South Bend man was going for a joy ride with a friend in a cornfield near the corner of Brick Rd. and N. Olive Rd, just northwest of the Indiana Toll Road-U.S. 31 connector.

The two men were riding on separate snowmobiles riding on, what was described as a rough and bumpy plowed field. The snowmobile was traveling at around 30 miles per hour when it flipped over, tossing the driver to the ground.

Officials say the man could not tell that there was a deep rut in the chiseled field underneath the snow. A considerable amount of damage was done to the snowmobile, including a broken handlebar and the tearing off of the windshield.

Paramedics took the man to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center to treat his broken left leg.

Investigators say he was wearing a helmet, and no violations are involved in the incident. The two men were riding on the patch of private property with permission of the owners.
