SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Police Department honored officers and civilians who went above the call of duty over the past year.

Among the honorees on Sunday was Division Chief Scott Ruszkowski, who was recognized for his response to the plane crash on Iowa Street last March.

Two people were killed and several others injured.

Ruszkowski was one of the first on the scene and helped setup a command post.

Officer Steve Noonan was also recognized for his outstanding acts of bravery with the Award of Valor and Purple Heart.

Last June, he responded to the horrific murder of 6-year-old Shirley Mundia, who was stabbed to death by her own father.
Several other officers and civilians were recognized for their lifesaving and innovative achievements.

John Gast and Tim Wiley were both named officers of the year.
