South Bend Police Chief Hurley retired Friday

South Bend Police Chief Chuck Hurley retired Friday, for the second time.

In March of last year, Hurley was called back to duty to serve as Interim Chief. Although Hurley had originally retired in 1988, he took the resumption of his duties as chief seriously.

“The one thing I am disappointed in was the homicides that occurred, and the level of violence that surrounded those,” says Retiring South Bend Police Chief Chuck Hurley. “We had a number of significant apprehensions between Metro Homicide and our Detective Bureau that identified some gang members we have taken them off the streets. Hopefully within the next year we will see the fruits of that.”

Hurley first joined the department in 1968, fresh out of the Marine Corps. South Bend's next Chief, Ron Teachman, will be sworn in next week.
