South Bend Common Council member Valerie Schey has voiced her concern about some recent changes with the South Bend Park Police.

She says that those officers have recently been stripped of guns and emergency vehicles.

She questions whether the Park Police are being put in danger.

Read Schey's full letter below and let us know what you think.

Dear Deputy Mayor Neal,

An issue has been brought to my attention that has me very concerned.

I have been told that within the past month, per Chief Teachman's direction, our City's Park Police Force has been stripped of its guns and emergency vehicles. With the recent spike in violent crime in our City, this restriction may pose a problem.

Unfortunately, urban parks such as ours can be a haven for crime. It does not seem safe to have officers commissioned to protect our parks deprived of the necessary equipment to protect themselves and our residents.

Would you please provide the Council an update on the rationale for this decision?

Sincerely,
Valerie Schey
