SOUTH BEND South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is en route to Afghanistan.

Buttigieg posted photos from the airport to his Facebook page, with the message, "All right USA, I'm going to miss you but I'll be back soon!"

The mayor's office confirms that he left Wednesday.
Buttigieg is headed overseas to fulfill his duties with the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Deputy Mayor Mark Neal talked with Buttigieg before he departed:

"Mayor Pete and I spoke recently and he said the administrative team is doing a great job in his absence, and to keep up the good work.

"He misses everyone in South Bend and regrets not being in town for the Notre Dame women's Sweet 16 game and the Silver Hawks season opener, but he says he hasn't missed the cold weather.

"The Mayor's training has gone well, and he says he's eager to get over there and serve, but looks forward even more to coming home at the end of September. He sends his best to all in South Bend."
