Mentors gathered for breakfast Tuesday morning to celebrate the difference made in children's lives and draw inspiration from each other
The South Bend Education Foundation organized the breakfast and Mayor Pete Buttigieg gave the keynote address. The foundation encourages adults to volunteer one hour of their time a week to make a difference in a student's life.
Cheryl Barker has been mentoring a young woman every Tuesday for the past eight years. She says having lunch with the kids has really added to her life.
“I think that there is a difference made because I think sometimes these kids just need someone to talk to, someone that's older than they are and will give them a different opinion,” says mentor Cheryl Barker. “Because a lot of times they just get all their information from their peers and that's not always the best information.”
Right after breakfast, new mentors, and those wanting a refresher, took part in certification training.
