Snow hits St. Joe County

Michiana got its first taste of winter weather. Plenty of snow now covers parts of northwest St. Joseph County.

Flakes fell outside the Village Shoppes in New Carlisle, Ind. Customers made their way inside the store Tuesday to get into the holiday spirit.

The Christmas decorations displayed throughout the store replicate the scenes right outside the window.

Store owner Bill Sutton said customers get into the holiday shopping mindset when winter weather hits the area.

“We've had people in for several weeks that are excited and looking forward to the first snowfall,” Sutton said.

Some families opted for a morning of shoveling the driveway instead of shopping.

“You lose track of time and all of sudden it is winter,” said John Antonucci, who owns Bruno’s in New Carlisle. “I can’t say that it was a pleasant surprise.”

Schools in New Carlisle were closed due to the weather. So, kids spent the day playing in the snow and even helping with clean-up.

“I cleared the stairs and he did the sidewalks and he did the path to the shed,” said Mia Wind, who was off from school for the day.

Just a few miles away, snow-covered roads caused headaches for drivers. State Road 2 was a major problem area. There were numerous slide-offs, crashes and even overturned semi-trucks, according to police.

Indiana State Police suggest slowing down on bridges or underpasses because ice is slow to melt there. They also advise that folks drive with at least half a tank of gas to make vehicles more stable on slick streets.
