The Humane Society of Elkhart County is investigating a sad case of animal abandonment.
Just before 4 on Friday afternoon a member of the shelter’s staff heard a dog crying for help somewhere outside of the shelter. Staff members worked to locate the dog and discovered a Pomeranian trapped in a cardboard box taped shut.
The box was left near a snow bank at the end of the Humane Society’s drive, making it difficult to locate the dog. The dog's nose was poking through a small hole.
A staff member opened the box to find the dog was “glad to be found and taken into the warmth of the shelter.”
According to the shelter’s director, Anne Reel, it is a crime to abandon an animal in a harmful or abusive manner.
The Humane Society is asking anyone with any information to call (574) 848-4225.
