Skylar Diggins scored a career high 33 points as 2nd ranked Notre Dame won on the road at #9 Tennessee 77-67 Monday night.
It's the 14th straight win for Notre Dame, which has now defeated Tennessee three times in a row. Prior to ND's win over the Lady Vols in the Elite 8 two years ago, the Irish were 0-20 all-time against UT. Monday night was Notre Dame's first win ever over Tennessee in Knoxville.
The win for the Irish also spoiled a big night for the Vols, which honored former head coach Pat Summitt. Summitt retired after last season due to early onset dementia. A banner recognizing her eight national championships was raised to the rafters before the game as many of Summit's former players were back for the big night.
The Lady Vols jumped out to an early lead before Notre Dame went on a 12-2 run to take a 14-9 advantage. UT tied the game at 25 but the Irish were able to take a 4-point lead into halftime.
Notre Dame opened up a 19 point lead in the 2nd half only to see Tennessee close to within five. That's when Diggins delivered one of her five assists to Madison Cable followed up by a 3 pointer from Skylar that sealed the game.
Jewell Loyd was the only other Irish player in double figures. She scored 10 points.
Notre Dame is now 19-1 on the season.
With the win, Notre Dame becomes the first program in women's basketball to defeat both UConn and Tennessee in the same season three years in a row.
