After nearly 47 years of running its operations, the city of Elkhart announced Friday that it has decided to close the Sims Oak Hills golf course.
The 18-hole course is located more than a dozen miles from city limits on State Rd 120 near Middlebury and was purchased by the city back in 1965 for just $1.
The course will close one week from Friday, on October 19.
The city does not expect to reopen the course and will instead try to sell the property.
Mayor Dick Moore says the facility has been losing money for years, and cannot sustain itself through players fees and other merchandise sold.
No tax dollars are used on the facility, and with the city's loss in property tax revenue and ongoing budget woes, Mayor Moore says none can be.
He says the city will continue to attempt to sell properties that are outside of the city limits.
