ELKHART COUNTY Sewer contamination in Elkhart County could soon become a state concern.

The Elkhart Truth reports that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management may have to step in, if residents can't find a way to prevent things like E. coli from spreading into creeks and ditches east of Wakarusa.

The county has considered asking residents to install their own septic systems, but most of the properties are too small. They've also discussed setting up a community-wide sewer system.

If they don't find a solution, residents could face fines from IDEM.
