South Bend, Ind. The South Bend community came together Saturday to say their final goodbyes to 6-year-old Shirley Mundia, whose life was cut short by a brutal act of violence.
Her killing happened nearly two weeks ago at the Irish Hills apartment complex in South Bend.
Police were initially called there to settle a domestic dispute, but arrived to find Edward Mwaura, 33, on top of his daughter, stabbing her repeatedly. An officer shot and killed Mwaura, but Shirley did not survive.
Dozens gathered Saturday afternoon to remember the little girl, who graduated from kindergarten just days before her tragic death. Mourners paid their last respects at Shirley's viewing, held at Alford's Mortuary along Napier Street on South Bend's near west side.
A memorial service immediately followed at the Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ on West Western Avenue.
Shirley's body is now on its way to her native country of Kenya for burial.
