In April, Mayor Pete Buttigieg demoted Darrell Boykins as South Bend police chief.
Eight months later, he is getting ready to announce three finalists for top cop.
It is rumored that all three candidates are men from outside departments.
During an interview with NewsCenter 16, the mayor would neither deny or confirm that theory.
The cloak of secrecy has made common council members, like Oliver Davis Jr., question Mayor Buttigieg.
“I think this has been an extraordinarily transparent and inclusive and professional search,” said the mayor. “I was elected to do things in a new way. And I think there are some people who want to go back to the old way. And we're just not going to do that as long as I'm there. We're going to do this right, we're going to be inclusive, but we're going to be forward looking.”
The mayor plans to announce his three finalists by Friday.
