Scammers imitate utility workers

Police have a warning for anyone still waiting for power to come back on. They say scammers are people preying on residents still in the dark by pretending to be Nipsco employees.

They knock on the door and ask to come into the house, which should be an immediate red flag. Nipsco workers would never need to go into a home because of a power outage.

This scam has already happened in the Hammond area, so police want others in storm damaged areas to be on alert.

If anyone says they are from a utility and need to get into a home, close the door and call police.
