SOUTH BEND This telephone-based scam isn't new, but it's still collecting victims in our community.
In the calls, a person claiming to be a government official warns the victim that he or she has a pending warrant for their arrest for fines, fees, or overdue taxes.
The caller then asks their target to purchase and submit a prepaid debit or gift card loaded with a certain amount of money.
According to the South Bend Police Department, this is a fraud. They warn that no public entity utilizes pre-paid plastic debit or gift cards as a form of currency.
Legitimate financial transactions are performed via certified checks made out to government agencies and any cash transactions are made at clerks offices or official bureaus that are easily identifiable as State, local or Federal facilities.
