A local viewer called our station this morning to warn us about a scam that is active in Michiana.

In this scam, a potential victim is asked to contribute to a fund for fallen officers and their families.

According to our caller, the request may be for a relatively small amount of money. In his case, the request was for $15.

If you are ever asked to donate to this kind of fund, contact the appropriate local authorities and have them confirm the validity of the campaign.

A second scam that is targeting our area has the caller announcing that you've been awarded a grant worth $7,000 to $10,000.

In order to receive the money, you're asked to buy a MoneyPak card and add $300 to it.

If you are ever asked to send money to a caller in exchange for a prize or grant, there is a good chance you're dealing with a scammer. If you're unsure, call your local Better Business Bureau.
