Santa's coming to downtown South Bend

Christmas is rapidly approaching, and there are only 18 more days until Santa Claus's busy night. But starting today, families can stop by Santa’s workshop in Downtown South Bend to get in the Christmas spirit.

St. Nick himself rode down Michigan Street in a horse-drawn carriage all the way to his holiday headquarters outside the College Football Hall of Fame.

Dozens of people came out tonight to see South Bend light its giant Christmas tree at the Jon Hunt Plaza and then watch Santa make his way downtown.

This year’s celebration had “excellent turnout,” according to South Bend Parks & Recreations program supervisor Paula Garis, “the Jon Hunt Plaza is full, and we have all kinds of people here just to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season.”

Kids had the chance to take their picture with Santa for free, decorate Christmas cookies, and check out the new gingerbread village. Anyone who did not get the chance to pay Santa a visit tonight can do so from here on out. Santa will be downtown every weekend between now and Christmas Eve.

This is the 24th year the event has been held, and it continues to bring residents in the community together for the holidays.
