South Bend Police are cautioning citizens about a telephone scam.
They say a group has been calling people claiming to be from various federal agencies, or even from the police.
Police say the group tells the potential victim they owe a fine for past violation or tax underpayment. They then threaten arrest or some sort of seizure of property or finances, if the money is not paid immediately.
The person asks the victim to provide a credit card number or banking information to pay the debt.
Police are cautioning residents to ask for a call-back numbers immediately if you suspect something.
Hang up and find the correct number of the government agency and report the call. Police say often checking the number will immediately reveal it is a scam.
Police also caution never to reveal banking or credit card information over the phone.
