A routine traffic stop in March turned into much more when a man refused to pull over.

Now, after months of investigation, we know whether the man or arresting officer will face charges.

It began Tuesday, March 25, at approximately 10:30 p.m. when a South Bend Police officer attempted to pull over a driver for a traffic stop at Sunnymede Ave. and Twyckenham.

The driver, Thomas Stevens, 55, did not stop and continued in his vehicle to his home in the 1500 block of Sunnymede.

The officer attempted to make an arrest, and in the process Stevens was seriously injured.

Stevens was taken to a local hospital and remained under police custody.

His mother, Suzanne Stevens, 76, was also arrested at the scene. She was transported to the St. Joseph County Jail, where she was booked for resisting arrest and battery to an officer.

County Metro Homicide was called out to handle the investigation due to the fact that this was an arrest by a law enforcement officer resulting in a serious injury to the suspect.

The investigation concluded that the officer involved in the stop, Aaron Knepper, lawfully engaged in the execution of his duties.

On Friday, June 20, Thomas Rodgers Stevens, 55, was charged with the following:

Count I: Possession of Marijuana
Count II: Possession of a Legend Drug
Count III: Resisting Law Enforcement
Count IV: Resisting Law Enforcement
Count V: Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance
Count VI: Disregarding Stop Sign a Class C Infraction
Count VII: Failure to Use Headlights Between Sunset and Sunrise, a Class C Infraction

Stevens' bond was set at $10,000.

His mother, Suzanne Stevens, 76, was also charged with resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor. Suzanne Stevens will be assigned a hearing date on Monday.
